How Agentic AI and Straight Through Processing Are Transforming Credit Operations

The Operational Bottleneck in Credit Workflows

Credit operations are a document management problem at scale. A typical Alkymi client processes over 1,000 loan agent notices per month; some process several times that number.

Loan agent notices arrive continuously, each carrying data to extract, validate, and act upon. For many teams, the default has been to review everything manually, even if extracted via Alkymi’s intelligent document processing workflow.

At these volumes, reviewing every document with the same level of human oversight is a capacity problem without a commensurate risk management benefit. This approach may be manageable when portfolios are smaller or simpler, but it struggles to scale.

Not Every Document Needs a Human

The vast majority of loan agent notices are standard interest payments or rollover confirmations generated by one of the common loan operations platforms. They are frequent, generated by only a handful of common software providers, and well-suited to straight-through processing in the vast majority of cases.

Not all notices fit this template: borrowing notices, for example, require the recipient to take action, involve funding decisions, and carry consequences if mishandled. Here, most loan operations teams want a human in the loop, and they should: the operational stakes (and occasional complexity) warrant it.

Configurable Triage Built Around How You Operate

The configuration is specific to each firm’s priorities: one team routes all new borrowing notices to a focused review queue, while another augments that approach with flags for certain kinds of security master updates. Yet another handles EMEA notices separately from US notices. These are not prebuilt templates, but rather reflect the operational structure of each firm, fully customized to align with their risk, compliance, and accounting requirements.

A Quality Layer Before Anything Moves Downstream

Configurable triage only works if the underlying extraction is trustworthy. Here, Alkymi’s dynamic validation comes in, serving as an agentic review layer evaluating the output for coherence and consistency before releasing the document for downstream ingestion.

In practice, this catches document-level inconsistencies that warrant a second look before data moves downstream. A notice that records a principal paydown in the transaction data yet carries a transaction description of "Interest Payment" contains no extraction error, but the internal contradiction is exactly the kind of thing a downstream system will not catch on its own. Similarly, a notice where the extracted global interest payment and lender payment amounts are identical is technically possible, but unusual enough to surface for review. Once the human reviewer resolves these highlighted exceptions, the document data is cleared to flow to downstream systems.

Attention Focused Where It Belongs

The result of Alkymi’s agentic workflow is a review queue that is smaller, better organized, and focused on the documents that genuinely require human attention. When routine notices process themselves, the benefit goes beyond eliminating raw data entry, which is the impact of Alkymi's baseline solution. Loan operations teams can now engage fully with work that requires their expertise. Portfolios are also reviewed more thoroughly, as attention is concentrated rather than distributed across all documents regardless of complexity or risk profile.

As portfolios grow and volumes increase, firms with linear workflows face linear costs. Firms with intelligent straight-through processing can absorb those volumes while maintaining the accuracy and auditability that their stakeholders require.
