Canadian asset managers are working through a practical challenge: how to turn investment in AI and automation into measurable improvements across the firm. For teams managing private markets and private credit, that often starts with getting reliable data out of documents and into the systems that depend on it.

That challenge shaped our conversations at TSAM Toronto on October 21–22. Alkymi returned as a Gold sponsor, joining industry peers for discussion across the exhibition floor, our roundtable, and a panel featuring our CEO and Co-founder, Harald Collet. We were also delighted to host the networking drinks reception, creating more opportunities to connect with the Canadian asset management community.

Where AI Is Delivering Value

Harald joined the panel “Making AI Pay: Where Canadian Asset Managers Are Seeing Real Results,” which explored questions facing firms as they expand their use of AI: where to prioritize investment, how to measure returns, when to build versus buy, and how lean teams can put new capabilities to work.

These decisions become more concrete when tied to a specific operational workflow. Collecting documents, processing investment notices, validating extracted data, and preparing information for downstream systems all create opportunities to reduce manual work. They also provide a basis for assessing results through processing time, exception rates, data quality, and the amount of human intervention required.

For asset managers, evaluating an AI solution means looking beyond its ability to process an individual document. The broader question is how effectively it supports the complete workflow, including the checks, approvals, and integrations needed to make the output usable.

Private Markets Data Bottlenecks Remain a Shared Challenge

Our roundtable, “Solving Data Bottlenecks in Private Markets and Private Credit,” brought together two packed tables of industry peers to discuss the challenges behind those workflows.

The conversations highlighted a shared struggle for Canadian asset managers: reducing manual work while making private markets data more accessible, reliable, and ready to use.

Private markets information arrives across documents, formats, and delivery channels. Teams need to collect it, identify the relevant information, validate it, and connect it to the correct investment or entity before it can support reporting and investment operations.

Each handoff adds work. When documents arrive late, information is inconsistent, or an exception requires investigation, the impact can extend across several teams and systems. Improving that process requires attention to how information moves from its original source to its eventual use.

Reliable Data Supports Reliable Automation

A central theme across our conversations was the relationship between data quality and the value firms can realize from AI.

Automating extraction is an important step. Investment teams also need confidence in the resulting data, visibility into its source, and a clear process for handling exceptions. As firms consider more agentic workflows, those requirements become even more consequential.

For example, a workflow that retrieves an investment notice and prepares data for a downstream system needs controls around what was collected, how it was interpreted, and whether it is ready to proceed. Clear review points and traceability help teams expand automation while maintaining oversight.

This is where a connected approach can make a meaningful difference. Retrieval, extraction, validation, review, and integration each contribute to the reliability of the overall process.

Making Progress with Focused Use Cases

For teams balancing ambitious plans with limited resources, a focused starting point can help establish value and guide expansion.

A recurring, document-intensive workflow offers a practical opportunity to define the current workload, identify the most costly bottlenecks, and measure the effect of automation. Success can then inform decisions about adjacent workflows and broader adoption.

At Alkymi, we help firms automate the retrieval and processing of private markets and private credit documents, validate the resulting data, and deliver it into existing systems. Our conversations at TSAM Toronto reinforced the importance of connecting these capabilities to the day-to-day priorities of investment operations teams.
